The story won first prize in the 2003 Richard & Judy Show's children's writing competition. The shortlisted authors were invited on the Channel 4 show, where the winner was announced live on air. I was informed during the interview that Richard & Judy's (then) young daughter had found it very scary, and for a long time the top search result for my name on google was a discussion on Mumsnet about a child who had been disturbed by a strange-sounding story he had been read at school.
